Indication
Treatment of serious bacterial infections such as septicemia, lower respiratory tract infection, intra-abdominal infection, skin/bone/joint infection, urinary tract infection (UTI), CNS infection (e.g., meningitis), burns, and post-surgical infections.
Dosage
As directed by physician; typically 15 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses by IM or IV infusion (adults/children); dose adjustment required for renal impairment; duration usually 7–10 days.
Side Effects & Precautions
Ototoxicity (hearing loss), nephrotoxicity (kidney injury), neurotoxicity, nausea, rash, headache, dizziness, rarely allergic reaction, respiratory paralysis.
Precautions: Avoid in known allergy to aminoglycosides; use with caution in renal dysfunction, elderly, neonates or during pregnancy; monitor renal function and hearing during therapy; do not mix with other nephrotoxic medicines.
